Mural Costs Explained

Mural projects are then generally split into two phases; design and installation;

Design work is the production of concept art for your project and considered separate from mural installation. This work can take several days and as such costs for design work are non-refundable. The concept art is important because it looks as close as the artist can get it to the finished mural. This involves the designed artwork being digitally superimposed onto the proposed wall so that the client can see how it will physically look.

An upfront fee is required for any design work to commence. This solidifies your commitment to the project and ensures the artist is paid for time creating concept work. This fee is provided with the estimate and is typically around 10% of the overall estimated project cost.

Two design options will be produced. After this, if you want to change your mind or add anything extra, the costs can be adjusted accordingly.

Installation includes any time and materials required on or off site to make the mural happen. This Includes any project management required, site visits, agreed prep work, set-up, clear-up and travel time. There may also be costs for additional artists, assistants and trades and skillspersons depending on the complexity of the project.

Usually 50% of the artists fee and costs must be paid before mural installation is scheduled, with the remaining balance due on completion.

Collaboration and communication with clients, stakeholders, and the community are vital throughout the design process. Gathering feedback and insights to refine the design and ensure that the final mural resonates with its audience while enhancing the visual and cultural landscape of the location is an important consideration.

Workshops, engagement sessions or events which the artist is required to attend or facilitate are generally charged per half day (minimum call) and should be agreed in advance of the project starting. Materials and prep time may incur additional costs.

Artists time is charged in line with the Scottish Artists Union Rates of Pay 2023.

The payment process will be agreed on in advance of any work commencing to avoid any confusion or delays.
