Frequently asked questions - murals
What type of paint do you use?
Spray paint is an obvious choice use for mural work - it enables finishes of the highest standard, in a fraction of the time of traditional oil paints. Modern acrylic paints are available specifically for this type of work; are also hard-wearing and UV resistant, and can be applied over a suitable base coat or primer. Materials and methods of application are recommended on a job-by-job basis depending on various factors. If you're looking for advice about a specific project, feel free to get in touch.
How do you scale up design?
A template is usually created from the design concept which identifies shapes and colours. This allows the image to be transferred to scale using either a projector, a stencil, or a hand-drawn square grid. The digital design concept is then used as a reference for re-creating the image.
Do you need permission?
The customer is responsible for obtaining permission to paint on any walls, including but not limited to the permission of landlords, land/building owners, relevant council departments, and tenants. Have you considered any other stakeholders or users of the space? How will it affect the neighbours or community? Will the artwork be temporary or permanent? The answers to these questions can also affect whether or not you require planning permission.
How long will the mural last?
Even using the highest quality materials, it is not possible to give a definitive guarantee as to how long the work will last. As with all paintwork, it is inevitable that there may be some deterioration over time from weathering and wear and tear. There are steps which can be taken that can protect your mural and maximise its lifespan and these can be discussed at the start of your project.
How long will it take?
Mural installations can take anything from 2 hours to 2 weeks, depending on the complexity of the job. Even if there is a very short amount of time spent on-site, there will still be a considerable amount of work required in advance and behind the scenes to make this happen.
